To get the full layered effect, the tank or tee-shirt worn underneath should be visible either up top by the neck or at the bottom. Due to the visibility of the layers, it is an opportunity for the wearer to experiment with different colour combinations and fabric textures. Don't be afraid, the whole idea is to have fun! The standard, or typical, way of layering is to put a tank underneath of a short or long sleeved tee, but this is by no means the only way to layer. An alternate way of doing this is to do the complete opposite - try wearing a tank or shorter sleeved tee over top of a longer sleeved one. (Hint: this look will be big for the fall.) A lacy camisole or tube top worn over a tee is also an unexpected way of layering. This is a great way of "dressing down" an otherwise dressier top. There are many advantages to layering; not only is it the quickest and easiest way to jazz up a wardrobe, it also provides some much needed length and coverage when paired with low-rise bottoms, but perhaps my favourite reason for layering is that it serves to contain and smooth out one's "extra bits," bits that become ever more prevalent in jeans which tend to push everything up and out! So come on girls, step outside the box and LAYER, LAYER, LAYER!!! C&C California and Velvet are among my favorite lines for layering. The tanks and tees included in these lines come in a wide variety of colours and are made super fine to avoid any added bulk. For those of you with more refined tastes, I strongly recommend James Perse whose shirts are made a little more structured giving the body a more defined shape.
